Monet was just in time to capture the old Zaandam. The Industrial Revolution, which had taken hold throughout most of Europe, and the advent of the steam engine, would within a few years irrevocably change the characteristic landscape of the Zaandam area, dotted with windmills, as Monet saw it.
The Monet Atelier includes replica’s of Monet’s 25 Zaandam paintings. A number of these were made by famous Zaandam painters. It offers a unique view on the work of Monet and at the same time an impression of Zaandam in 1871.
But the Monet Atelier is much more than an exhibition space. It is an inspirational location that is continuously developing and evolving – a place where new ideas can take shape and a meeting place for Monet enthusiasts.
It functions as an information point and a knowledge centre for Monet’s time in Zaandam, the starting point for Monet Walks, a location for research into Monet’s relationship to Zaandam, painting workshops and lectures.
The MonetAtelier is located in the recently built ‘Luchthuis aan de Zaan’, which has made it possible to turn one of Monet’s paintings back into real life.

Look for the stairs on the north side of the Beatrixbrug across the Zaan, in line with the Gedempte Gracht. A footbridge will lead you to the MonetAtelier.

Visit the MonetAtelier and see Zaandam through the eyes of the world famous French painter Claude Monet. Monet made twenty-four landscapes and one portrait during his Zaandam period. The Zaandam paintings comprise the first large group of works from a single location and a continuous period. Back in France, Monet adopted this approach on several other occasions. His famous series such as the haystacks, the poplars on the River Epte, the Cathedral of Rouen and the water lilies in Giverny were all created in this way.
